Modhera Sun Temple: A Road Trip Into Gujarat's History

Some places don't need a long introduction. You walk in, look around and immediately understand why people still talk about them centuries later. Modhera Sun Temple is one of those places.

This 11th-century heritage site in Mehsana district, about 100 km from Ahmedabad, was built during the reign of Solanki ruler Bhima I around 1026–27 CE. It was dedicated to the Sun God, and even today the scale of the architecture is enough to make you pause.

Why Modhera Sun Temple Is Special

The first thing most people notice is Surya Kund. It is an enormous, beautifully designed stepwell in front of the temple, with rows of steps leading down to the water. The kund has 108 shrines dedicated to various deities, which is one of the details that makes the complex feel so carefully planned.

Then there is the Sabha Mandap, the hall with carved pillars and sculptures. Even if you are not usually interested in temple architecture, it is hard not to look closely. The stonework is detailed enough that you keep finding new figures, patterns and stories as you walk around.

Don't Rush Through the Temple

The original idol of the Sun God is no longer there, but the architecture still carries that intention.

Gujarat Tourism often groups this as a heritage route: Ahmedabad → Patan → Modhera. If you have time, you can also look at Patola weaving in Patan, which is one of the region's best-known textile traditions. That combination turns a simple temple visit into a proper Gujarat heritage road trip.

A Little Something Most People Miss

Near the Sun Temple is the Modheshwari Mata Temple, dedicated to Goddess Modheshwari. It is less than 2 km away, so it is an easy extra stop if you want one more local landmark without adding much driving.

If you are visiting Gujarat in January, keep the Modhera Dance Festival in mind. It is usually held around the third weekend of January, with the temple as the backdrop. That is a completely different way of seeing the same place.

The Best Way to Reach Modhera?

Ahmedabad is about 101 km away. Mehsana is around 26 km away. For a day trip, driving is the most practical option, especially if you want to stop at Patan as well.
