There comes a point when Lonavala starts feeling like the default answer to every weekend plan. Someone says, “Road trip?” Someone else immediately says, “Lonavala?” So, if you’re looking for something a little quieter, pack your bags and point the car towards Bhandardara. Around 160 km from Pune, Bhandardara sits in the Sahyadris and feels very different from the usual busy weekend destinations. The drive itself is part of the experience, with hills, villages and changing landscapes along the way. Maharashtra Tourism lists the road distance from Pune at about 156 km. And this is exactly the kind of trip where having your own car makes sense.
First things first: What makes Bhandardara special?

Bhandardara isn’t about big malls, packed streets or checking off ten attractions in one day. It’s about slowing down. There’s Arthur Lake, surrounded by hills and forests. There’s Wilson Dam, one of the region’s historic landmarks. Then you have waterfalls, forts, trekking routes and little stretches of road where you’ll probably want to stop just because the view looks too good to ignore. Maharashtra Tourism also highlights the area for camping, trekking, waterfalls and outdoor experiences.
The road trip is half the fun
The Pune–Bhandardara drive is roughly 156–165 km, depending on the route and starting point. Don’t make the mistake of treating it like a race. Leave early, keep some snacks in the car and make a playlist before you start. And when you see a nice viewpoint? Stop. That’s one of the biggest advantages of booking a car from Bharatself drive from Pune to Bhandardara. You’re not following someone else’s schedule. You can take a detour, stop for chai or spend an extra half hour by the lake without worrying about your next cab.
Your Bhandardara checklist
Arthur Lake

This is probably where you’ll want to slow down. The lake was formed after the construction of Wilson Dam on the Pravara River and is surrounded by the Sahyadri hills. The calm setting makes it a good place to simply sit, take photographs or spend some quiet time. If you’re staying overnight, the area is also known for lakeside camping and stargazing.
2. Randha Falls

About 10 km from Bhandardara Dam, Randha Falls is one of the area’s major attractions. The Pravara River drops into a deep gorge, creating an impressive waterfall, particularly when the water is flowing strongly. During the monsoon, this is one of those places where you don’t really need a caption for your Instagram post. The waterfall does all the work.
3. Umbrella Waterfall

Near Wilson Dam, Umbrella Falls becomes particularly impressive when water is released from the dam. The water flows over the rocks in a shape that gives the waterfall its name. It’s one of the sights that makes a monsoon visit to Bhandardara special.
4. Ratangad

Want to add some adventure? Ratangad is an old hill fort near Bhandardara and a popular trekking destination. Its summit offers views across the Sahyadris and towards Bhandardara Lake. The fort is also known for its natural rock formation called Nedhe, or the “Eye of the Needle.” This one is better suited to people who actually enjoy trekking, don’t add it to the itinerary just because it looks good on Instagram.
When should you go?
Bhandardara changes with the seasons.
- Monsoon:Green hills, mist and waterfalls make this season incredibly scenic. But mountain roads and trekking trails can become slippery, so check local conditions before setting out.
- Post-monsoon & winter:A great time for comfortable outdoor exploration, trekking and spending time around the lake. Maharashtra Tourism currently recommends the broader June–February period for Bhandardara, while its Marathi tourism page highlights September–February as a particularly good period.
- Summer: It can still work for a short escape, especially if you’re looking for a break from the city, but afternoons can be warmer.
Why take a self drive car from Pune?
Because Bhandardara isn’t really a destination you want to experience while watching the clock. With a self drive car from Pune, you can decide when to leave, where to stop and how long to stay. Planning a family trip? Take a comfortable car and leave early. Going with friends? Put together a playlist, load the snacks and make the drive part of the fun. Going as a couple? You already know what to do, find a scenic stop and pretend you weren’t planning it all along. With Bharat Self Drive, you can choose a car based on your trip and rental duration, making it easier to turn a normal weekend into a proper road trip.
A better kind of weekend
Maybe Bhandardara isn’t completely unknown anymore. But compared with Pune’s usual weekend crowd-pullers, it still gives you that feeling of getting away from the city. You get mountains instead of buildings. A lake instead of traffic. Waterfalls instead of notifications. And a road that gives you enough reasons to stop along the way. So the next time someone says, “Lonavala?” You can say: “Not this time. Let’s go a little farther.”
